On February 1st, you made a difference by joining K-LOVE to help raise $495,000 in relief efforts for Food for the Hungry in response to the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti that took the lives of 220,000 and left over a million homeless. THANK YOU! Food for the Hungry was able to provide emergency support to the region, and is still working to rebuild Haiti one year later.
Your support has enabled Food for the Hungry to provide support in the following areas to the victims of the January earthquake in the past year:
Health and Hygiene
- Medical teams and supplies have helped 20,000 people through mobile medical clinics.
- Training has been provided to 3,000 “leader-mothers” in the areas of water purification and sanitation.
Food, water and sanitation
- Tens of thousands of packaged meals have been delivered to families in need.
- Tarps, jerry cans and hygiene kits with basic needs have been given to almost 4,000 families.
- To help with water sanitation, 117 latrines have been dug, 1,000 hand washing stations have been installed, and hundreds of water filtration systems capable of delivering up to 600 gallons of water per day have been supplied to Haitians.
Shelter
- Food for the Hungry has built 1,500 transitional shelters for victims, and is working with Samaritan’s Purse to find a more permanent solution for the individuals.
Child protection and support
- In collaboration with non-government organizations and churches, almost 10,000 children have been served in 62 child-friendly areas throughout Haiti to help with much-needed care and counseling.
- Volunteers have been trained in child protection issues to prevent children from abuse, exploitation, or being sold into slavery.
Cash for work
- Nearly 6,000 workers were hired for rubble removal, 40 percent of them women
While much has been done, there is still a great deal of support needed in Haiti. On October 15th, health officials reported a cholera outbreak due to the lack of clean drinking water and poor sanitation. Since then, over 1,500 people have died due to the disease, and 30,000 Haitians have been infected. Food for the Hungry is currently training staff and mothers in the local communities in cholera prevention and treatment.
